Wheelchair Accessibility in New Housing

The need for wheelchair accessible housing is greater than ever. Not only are more people with disabilities becoming an integral part of our community, but our nation as a whole is aging rapidly. Soon, seniors and people with disabilities will be competing for what little wheelchair accessible housing is available.

For this reason, Voices for Independence is constantly lobbying and encouraging new construction of universal housing, designed to accommodate needs of everyone, disabled or not.

New housing developments need to reserve a substantial portion of each new community for barrier free homes. Apartment complexes and residential buildings should be constructed with barrier free entryways and accommodating interiors.

Renovations and remodeling budgets should include modifications to make existing buildings more accessible.
