Advocacy is an action which produces change. Consumers may be afraid or may not understand how to stand up for their Civil Rights. Our mission at Voices for Independence is to empower people with disabilities and promote independent living. Before our advocacy efforts, people with disabilities couldn't do something as simple as crossing the street or have access to public places.
Could you imagine having to plan to call ahead just to enjoy a simple cup of coffee or being told "Could you go through the drive thru because it would be easier than shoveling the snow on our ramp?" You should because it happens. Everyday people with disabilities are discriminated against in many different ways, from being denied an interpreter at a hospital or not being able to use a restroom at a restaurant. Accessible mass transportation, sidewalks, curb ramps along with business entrances and restrooms are better today because of the influence of VFI Advocacy.
The Staff at Voices for Independence are committed to empowering all people with disabilities with the skills to be their own advocate because we understand that they have Civil Rights that are being violated. Our advocacy department is here to back them up. Voices for Independence provides advocacy services in Erie, Crawford, Clarion, Forest, Venango and Warren counties.
