Housing

Accessible Housing Assistance

We maintain that all persons live a viable and wholesome life style. We therefore assist a consumer in finding a safe and affordable housing. Accessible, affordable housing is important to everyone with a disability. VFI staff's goal is to make sure that more housing is available in locations desired by the disability community. Transitioning consumers out of nursing homes is one of our main priorities.

Section 8 Housing

This is subsidized housing through PHA and is administered through the local Housing Authority. A person may apply at the local Housing Authority on a daily basis from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday thru Friday. The program is on a first come, first serve basis and there is a waiting list. This program helps to provide affordable housing with a greater area to choose from.

Home Modifications

When a consumer enrolls into our waiver program, they may be eligible for home modifications such as ramps, accessible bathroom, accessible kitchen, etc. We work with contractors and landlords to help assist a consumer to modify for their daily living. Landlords are required by law to allow a person who has a disability, at the consumer’s expense, to make reasonable modifications to their unit. This is so that the consumer will have the full enjoyment of the premises. In many circumstances a landlord may want as part of the condition of their approval of the modification; to have the tenant restore the unit to its original condition, should the tenant want to move.

There is a housing staff that works along with the consumer to assist with paperwork and contractors. This is to insure funding and follow through is completed.

It is our goal to promote home modification to improve a consumer's quality of life.

Home Buying

VFI housing staff assist consumers with literature and brochures for buying a home. There are financial institutions who offer home buying programs to consumers with a low income. Although it has been very few financial institutions offering affordable cost for the person that has a low income, we find there are more coming aboard.

The housing staff will assist a person in making the best choice based on the need. Interest rates and lending institutions are the priorities when making a decision to buy a home. You do have an option.
